MacBook Mini 9

February 21, 2009 Leave a comment

As you may know, I have a Dell Mini 9. So far I had updated the RAM to 2GB and installed Ubuntu 8.10 with the Netbook Remix bits. So far so good.

I also have a MacBook Pro 15″ (previous generation), which is my main machine.

Then, today, I ran across this:

How To: Hackintosh a Dell Mini 9 Into the Ultimate OS X Netbook

Now, I have a full install for my wife’s iMac. So, given my fondness for Mac and my desire to have a great OS on my Mini 9, naturally I had to give it a try.

Not only does it work, but I found a utility that allowed me to change the default Dvorak layout to match the layout changes I found work for me. I am now the proud owner of what I am calling a MacBook Mini 9.

I’ve been giggling like a schoolgirl for the last hour.

Mini 9 Update

First, yes, I again got no writing done. I’m bad.

But, truth be told, I’m in geek heaven. My Mini 9 came in yesterday, and I have already put Ubuntu 8.10 on it, with netbook remix, and all the apps I wanted. It works like a charm, and I’m only using 3GB of disk space. Amazing!

I have to stress my experience so far has been very positive. Besides the odd keyboard layout (a minor thing with me at best), the one nagging issue is a very annoyingly-placed dead pixel. The bad news is, since the Mini 9 is an Inspiron, they won’t replace the screen unless you have 6 or more dead pixels. Bummer.

Now I have to wait for my keyboard stickers to arrive so I can change the keyboard to Dvorak…
